Where are our priorities?
Catherine Ryan Hyde
Twice this month I've had teachers email me and ask if I would donate books for their class or library. There's no funding available to buy them, and the teachers can't afford to buy as many as they need out of their own pocket. The more I think about it, the more it makes me furious. Not because they asked me for books--that was creative and understandable and I'm working with them to solve the thing. I'm furious because we have the money to subsidize big oil companies. We have the money to give a tax rebate to GE, one of the richest corporations in the world. But we don't have the money for books for our schools. Shows where our priorities are. And where they need to be.
